Next Sony Xperia Devices May Feature Digital Signing Tech

The Sony Xperia series of smartphones have always been very camera-centric, with almost every new generation adding features on that aspect. For the next batch of Xperia devices, it looks like the new feature will come in the form of digital signage tech.

Japanese site SumahoDigest claims that this will be a “world’s first” for the Sony Xperia 1 VI and Xperia 5 VI, which will likely see their unveilings happen next year. As for what it does, as the name suggest, the tech digitally signs shots you take with the camera of these phones. This reportedly helps combat fakes, but the report does not elaborate the method in which it works.

The report also notes that, in addition to the 6th generation Sony Xperia smartphones, this digital signing tech will also be added to some of the company’s recent-ish cameras as well. The list includes the A9 III and A7S III, among others, which will be getting the feature via software update.

For a series of smartphones made for enthusiasts, it’s easy to see why this is a feature that’s coming to the Sony Xperia 1 VI and Xperia 5 VI. Like the company’s cameras, the idea is to make photos and videos shot using these devices harder to fake, with the digital signing process presumably adding more metadata.

Though for the average user who would probably just snap on auto mode and upload to social media, it remains to be seen the extent to which this feature is appreciated. Then again, the Sony Xperia line is not exactly priced with the average consumer in mind anyway.
