DJI has recently unveiled the Ronin 4D, a 4-axis cinema camera gimbal system. Designed for professionals, the device is capable of recording up to 8K resolution videos and also comes with a LiDAR-based rangefinder that is promised to offer “sharper, faster and more reliable focusing.”

The camera featured on the Ronin 4D is DJI’s own Zenmuse X9, which is offered in 6K or 8K variants that captures videos at 60 fps and 75 fps respectively. It is a full-frame shooter with built-in neutral-density (ND) filters for exposure control, and also supports interchangeable lenses from either DJI’s DL or Leica’s M lenses. Other than that, the Zenmuse X9 features a dynamic range of 14 stops, dual-native ISO of 800 – 5000, and supports three different video formats: RAW, ProRes, and H.264.

As for the DJI Ronin 4D itself, it is touted to be the company‘s first gimbal to offer the Z-axis to complete its 4-axis stabilisation system – with the aim to further reduce bumps while recording, especially when walking or running. The device is considerably small and light, coming in at a claimed weight of only 4.67kg.

Featured onboard are three storage methods (USB SSD, CFExpress Type-B, and the company’s proprietary PROSSD), built-in microphones, 3.5mm mic ports, an expansion plate for XLR ports, and a long range video transmitter that can operate up to 20,000 feet and output 1080/60p videos to remote monitors. In terms of battery life, the company says the Ronin 4D, in its entirety, is capable of lasting up to 2.5 hours of shooting time.

DJI claims the gimbal’s onboard LiDAR system offers 43,200 ranging points reaching as far as 10 meters, which enables it to locate, track and focus on subjects quickly and accurately – even in low-light environments. Besides that, complementing it are other enhancements such as the company’s own AI-powered ActiveTrack Pro and an Automated Manual Focus feature that lets camera operators “pull focus with extreme precision.”

The new DJI Ronin 4D is priced at US$7,199 (~RM29,934) for the 6K variant, while the 8K model will retail at US$11,499 (~RM47,812). In terms of availability, the 6K version will be the first to arrive in select markets by December, whereas the 8K version is said to be available at a later date. Unfortunately, it is not known whether either models will see a release in Malaysia.
