Petronas Launches First 5G Private Network In Malaysia

Petronas Private 5G Network launch

Petronas is officially the first company to adopt a 5G private network in Malaysia for enterprise use. It is deployed at the dynamic global energy group‘s Regasification Terminal Sungai Udang (RGTSU) in Melaka for the purpose of optimising its internal operations. As revealed during the launch event held earlier today, the move is supported by the Ministry of Communications and Digital (KKD) and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC).

In a statement, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof said the standalone network exhibited aspirations under the Madani economy and the New Industrial Master Plan 2023 framework. He added that 5G is capable of empowering Malaysia’s industries to innovate, compete and excel on a global scale, while the deployment of private networks similar to Petronas’ could also set the stage further for collaborative developments among the government, private sector and academia to fully unlock the potential of 5G technology.

Meanwhile, Petronas senior vice president of project delivery and technology Datuk Bacho Pilong revealed that the deployment of the private network at RGTSU has improved its operational efficiency and safety, as well as supporting its business and sustainability targets. “By combining 5G with the Internet of Things, Artificial Intelligence and automation, we are putting Petronas as among the leaders in the global technological race,” he said during the launch.

On a related note, it is reported that MCMC is working closely with mobile service providers to deploy 5G private networks that will foster more use case development across industries in Malaysia. Apart from Petronas, no other local companies have publicly expressed interest in adopting this approach just yet.
