AMD Launches Software Adrenalin Edition 2022; FSR 2.0 Coming Q2 2022

AMD is updating its Software Adrenalin Edition suite with the latest feature the chipmaker has to offer. Officially called Software Adrenalin Edition 2022, the latest update gives Ryzen and Radeon users access to both new and updated features and tools.

Among the latest addition, Radeon Super Resolution (RSR) upscaling technology can now be enabled within the software overlay and should work across “thousands of games”. Important to note, the features will now support Radeon RX 5000 series cards and is easily accessible via the overlay. For those who are still wondering about the difference between RSR and FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR): RSR is a driver-based feature that is executed via the suite, while FSR is usually baked into the game and lies in the hand of the developer to have it integrated.

Technically speaking, this means that RSR should work on any title in fullscreen mode and is theoretically a one-up over FSR, given how it doesn’t require implementation from developers.

On the subject of FSR, the feature has now been updated to version 2.0 and will now use temporal data to drive higher image qualities after being upscaled. More importantly, AMD says that the 2nd generation upscaling feature no longer requires dedicated Machine Learning (ML) hardware, meaning that virtually any graphics cards without task-dedicated cores – take NVIDIA’s Tensor and RT cores, for example – for users to take advantage of the feature.

The next feature to receive an update is AMD Link. With the latest update, gamers will be able to connect with three additional friends on their PC, enabling them to play local multiplayer games. In addition, users will be able to use their mobile devices as a secondary controller and assign hotkeys to them as well. Lastly, the remote gaming tool will support both Intel and NVIDIA-based platforms.

Beyond those updates, AMD also made some slight tweaks and improvements to the user interface of Software Adrenalin Edition 2022. Specifically, a new notifications window will appear every time a game launches, informing players what features are active, disabled, or supported by the title. There’s also Radeon Image Sharpening and as the name suggests, the feature is designed to enhance details on the screen when active, although this feature is very clearly a non-gaming enhancement.

The new AMD Software Adrenalin Edition 2022 will be available for download starting today, while the FSR 2.0 update will only be available sometime within the second quarter of this year, with no specific date having been given.
