MediaTek Announces Pentonic 2000 SoC For 8K 120Hz TVs

MediaTek recently launched its new Pentonic 2000 SoC, alongside its new Dimensity 9000 chipset for mobile devices. What sets this SoC apart from its mobile counterpart is the fact that this new chipset is designed for flagship 8K TVs.

Specs-wise, the Pentonic 2000 is manufactured using the TSMC’s 7nm N7 process node. From a performance standpoint, the new chip will able to drive up to 8K resolutions with refresh rates as high as 120Hz, and 144Hz for the relevant PC hardware and the current console generation (i.e. PS5, Xbox Series X/Series S).

In addition to the high resolutions, the Pentonic 2000 is also integrated with an 8K 120HZ MEMC engine, MediaTek AI Processing Unit (APU), and AI-Super Resolution technology, the latter allowing the chip to upscale lower-resolution content to a display’s native resolution. Further, the SoC is also one of the first 8K TV chipsets to support the Versatile Video Coding (VVC) H.266 codec, as well as Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos. Lastly, the Pentonic 2000 also supports the ultra-fast UFS 3.1 storage medium and even comes equipped with MediaTek’s Wi-Fi 6E technology and 5G modems.
