While there has been plenty of news and speculations about Intel’s top-tier ARC Alchemist GPUs, the same cannot quite be said about a lower-tier GPU. On that note, there are now rumours suggesting that the chipmaker may, in fact, already have plans for such a product.
The rumour stems from the popular YouTuber, Moore’s Law Is Dead (MLID), who reports that the Intel GPU, codenamed DG2-128EU, is expected to make an appearance sometime during the first quarter of 2022, while widespread adoption isn’t expected until the second quarter of the same year. Moreover, the first iteration of the GPU is expected to roll out for laptops – specifically, Dell and ASUS models – before a full-fledge desktop variant does.
Specs-wise, the DG2-128Eu Alchemist card could feature up to 6GB GDDR6 memory, accompanied by a 96-bit memory bus, which is much smaller than the standard 128-bit for low-end graphics cards, but clearly bigger than the original 64-bit memory bus that was hinted at with previous rumours. Further, MLID isn’t ruling out the possibility of a 4GB, 64-bit variant of the GPU for laptops, nor is he striking out the possibility of a 3GB model too.
By comparison, the alleged Intel GPU would compete with AMD’s own rumoured future RDNA 2 GPUs, the Radeon RX 6400 and RX 6500, as well as NVIDIA’s own GeForce RTX 3050 series GPUs.
As it stands, this is merely a rumour. That said, Intel has said that it plans on launching its GPU, both laptop and desktop, at different times of 2022, so we’ll just have to wait until then to find out more.
