Sony has officially unveiled the new Xperia Pro-I earlier today, a high-end variant of its flagship smartphone line that is designed specially for professionals in the photography and filming field. And as you may recall from our previous report, it was also leaked in its full glory just a day prior to its launch.
While the design and highlights of the phone was already laid out for all to see, the leak did leave some room for Sony to fully detail the Pro-I’s specifications and features. Naturally, the new Xperia sports the series’ signature tall form factor with a wide aspect ratio. Specifically, the Pro-I comes with a 6.5-inch OLED display with 4K resolution, 120Hz refresh rate, and a 21:9 aspect ratio. Housed within the upper bezel is a 8MP front-facing camera for selfies or video calls. Audio-wise, the phone is equipped with the brand’s LDAC and DSEE technologies, and features two full-range speakers with Dolby Atmos support.
Like the Xperia 1 III, all of the physical buttons on the Pro-I are located on its right hand side, which includes a volume rocker, a lock button and fingerprint sensor combo, as well as dedicated shutter and record buttons. On top of the phone is a 3.5mm headphone jack, while situated at the bottom is a USB-C port. The Sony Xperia Pro-I is rated IPX5/IPX8 in terms of water resistance, and has a dust-proof rating of IP6X.
Under the hood is the same Snapdragon 888 chipset as its sibling, but now paired together with 12GB of RAM and an internal storage capacity of 512GB, which can be expanded further to 1TB via a microSD card. Powering the entire smartphone is a 4,500mAh battery that is claimed to enable for a full day’s use on a single charge. Included in the Xpera Pro-I’s packaging is a power adapter that provides 30W fast charging that can top-up the device’s battery capacity to 50% in 30 minutes.
On the back of the Xperia Pro-I is an all-new 12MP triple camera setup, championed by the same 1-inch 2.4µm Exmor RS sensor that is featured on Sony’s RX100 VII Cyber-shot camera. This particular sensor is independently powered by the brand’s BIONZ X imaging processor, which enables it to shoot up to 20 fps with autofocus and auto-exposure enabled, as well as shoot 12-bit RAW files and native 4K videos at 120 fps. Complementing the 1-inch sensor is a Zeiss enhanced 24mm lens that can switch between f/2.0 and f/4.0 apertures.
Apart from that, the phone also comes with eye-detection AF and 315 points of autofocus that cover 90% of the frame. The other two sensors that completes the Xperia Pro-I’s triple camera setup is a 12MP f/2.2 16mm ultrawide and a 12MP f/2.4 50mm telephoto.
As expected from a high-end variant, the new Xperia Pro-I is set to retail at an eye-watering price of US$1,800 (~RM7,466) and will ship out in December. Sony has confirmed that the new smartphone will arrive in Malaysia around the same time, but has yet to announce its local pricing.
