As CES 2024 winds down after most of the big brands have done their big unveils, it’s time to look at some of the stranger things (pun not intended) that have made appearances there. One example is the Nwm MBH001, which are headphones with the most important parts seemingly missing.
According to TechCrunch, the brand name stands for New Wave Maker, and pronounced “noom”. But more importantly, the bits on conventional headphones that funnel the sound from the drivers to your ears are not there on the Nwm MBH001. This would suggest major sound leakage, since there’s nothing there to stop the sound from spilling out anyway, no matter the extent of sound beaming sophistry.
That’s where the key tech of the Mwn MBH001 comes in. The report notes that it uses noise-cancelling tech, but in a way that’s the inverse of its conventional use. Rather than cancelling unwanted sound going into your ear, this pair of headphones instead cancels sounds that would otherwise leak outside of your ear.
This implementation of sound-cancelling tech allows it to work sort of like a mix of open-ear buds and the ambient mode of more conventional headphones. That is, you can listen to your music as well as your surroundings with the Nwm MBH001 on, but others can’t hear what’s supposed to be for your ears only. The report notes that it works as intended, not hearing anything from the headphones when not worn. Also noted though was that, in its current iteration, it only has its silicone gasket serving as padding, and isn’t very comfortable as a result, even if it’s very light due to the design.
With its current form being an early version, the company says that the retail version of the Nwm MBH001 won’t be ready for a few months at least. And even then, it remains to be seen if it will be widely available around the world, and by extension, making their way to the local market.
