Creative Partners With xMEMS Labs To Make Earbuds With Solid State Drivers In Audio

if you grew up in the 90s, then the brand Creative should drum up memories of their PC soundcards and speakers. Fast forward to today, the Singaporean brand recently announced that it had partnered up with XMEMS Labs to incorporate the latter’s new solid-state drivers in their next true wireless stereo (TWS) earbuds.

Let’s bring you up to speed: xMEMS Labs first unveiled what it calls the world’s first solid-state speakers, or micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS), to the world back in April this year. The speakers are driven by, obviously, solid-state drivers, which are designed to replace the traditional coils and magnets. The latter being a technology that is still being used in virtually all modern-day audio products, since their inception over a hundred years ago.

But the one major difference between MEMS and traditional coils and drivers is that the former is considerably smaller. And yet, xMEMS Labs claims that it boasts exceptional stiffness, better phase consistency, along with other improvements.

The news that Creative is adopting XMEMS Labs’ solid-state drivers is both relatively important and also big: to date, there’s still no personal audio device on the current market that is fitted with said drivers. In fact, one of the most premium drivers available on the market right now are planar magnetic drivers, and headphones that rock said drivers? They have a tendency of costing a fortune.

Both Creative and XMEMS Labs says that by implementing solid-state drivers, the former’s next set of TWS earbuds would deliver “crystal-clear sound that reproduces every nuance of music and audio content with astounding accuracy”.

As for when we can expect Creative to launch its first earbuds with the xMEMS Lab solid-state driver, the company says that the first product is expected to hit the market “later this year”.
