Volvo today has launched its second electric vehicle model, the C40 Recharge Pure Electric, for the local market. Much like the XC40 Recharge Pure Electric that came before, the car is fully assembled via the company’s Malaysian factory, which also serves as a manufacturing hub for the ASEAN market.
Speaking of its cousin, the new Volvo C40 Recharge Pure Electric shares the same specifications as the all-electric variant, which is based on the brand’s Compact Modular Architecture platform. What sets this model apart from the XC40 is the design of its side and rear profile, which ditches the familiar SUV look with a more dynamic styling – giving the car a more sportier, coupe-like look. That being said, both vehicles look identical when viewed from the front, as well as from the inside.
Specs-wise, the C40 offers an electric AWD (all-wheel drive) powertrain which consists of two 300 kW motors that are capable of producing 402 hp (408 PS) and 660 Nm of torque. Volvo claims that newer model can achieve a top speed limited to 180 km/h and hit 0 – 100 km/h in just 4.7 seconds, making it slightly quicker than the XC40 Recharge Pure Electric.
Powering the motors is a lithium-ion battery with an energy capacity of 78 kWh, which is rated to deliver up to an impressive 450 km of range on a single charge based on the WLTP cycle. Speaking of which, the company says the C40 takes about 7.5 hours for a full charge via a 11kW AC input, and about half an hour via a 150 kW DC fast charger.
Inside, the new C40 Recharge Pure Electric comes with a leather-free interior, featuring a centre console with Android Automotive OS-powered infotainment system, 12-inch digital instrument cluster, Qi wireless charging panel, 600-watt Harman Kardon sound system with 14 speakers, Charcoal Connect Suede textile upholstery, panoramic sunroof, and powered front seats. In terms of safety and assistance, included is the City Safety system, front and rear collision warning and mitigation support, Driver Alert Control, Lane Keeping, Run-Off Road Mitigation, Road Edge Detection, Oncoming Lane Mitigation, Blind Spot Information System with Steer Assist, and Cross Traffic Alert with Autobrake.
For the Malaysian market, the all-new Volvo C40 Recharge Pure Electric is priced at RM 288,888 on-the-road without insurance, which is just RM 10,000 more than the EV variant of the current generation XC40. It is offered in Fjord Blue, Black Stone, Silver Dawn, Crystal White, and Sage Green.
Additionally, each purchase will come with a five-year unlimited mileage warranty, an eight-year 160,000 km battery warranty, five years or 100,000 km free service, and five-year roadside assistance. Online bookings are slated to open later today at 8pm, while the vehicle itself will be available for viewing at all authorised Volvo dealers in Malaysia starting 15 December 2022 onwards.
