Ubisoft May Be Working On A New Splinter Cell Game

Splinter Cell

The last entry in the Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell series was Blacklist, which came out all the way back in 2013. But it looks like publisher Ubisoft may be working on another entry into the series, potentially ending its near decade-long hiatus.

According to VGC, two sources said that the new Splinter Cell title “was being led by a studio outside of its traditional Montreal base”. It is currently in an early phase of production, but could see an announcement as early as next year.

The report suggests that the new Splinter Cell entry is being worked on “as a means of winning back fans frustrated by recent efforts to revive the franchise in mobile and VR spaces”. The former is referring to the mobile game Tom Clancy’s Elite Squad, which was shut down earlier this month, barely a year after launch. The latter refers to the Splinter Cell title that’s exclusive to Facebook-owned Oculus VR.

For fans of the Tom Clancy gaming universe, this is no doubt the right thing to do. But it would not be surprising if fans remain sceptical until they see actual gameplay. After all, Ubisoft has recently been squandering the Tom Clancy franchise and the Ghost Recon subseries in the name of trend-chasing rather than sticking to the franchise’s roots. Hopefully this new Splinter Cell, being one of the last surviving series in the military tactical stealth genre of games, can deliver what fans really want instead.
