This year saw the release of Nothing’s first product, the Nothing ear (1) true wireless earbuds, which also launched in Malaysia just a couple of days back. Now, a recent rumour is suggesting that the company’s follow-up product is about several months away from its unveiling. Expected to be released sometime in 2022, Nothing’s next product is said to be its first ever smartphone.
Word regarding the alleged development of the device was tipped by leakster Mukul Sharma (via 91mobiles), although nothing else about the product was mentioned. Interestingly, this rumour surfaced not long after Nothing’s announcement of a new partnership with Qualcomm earlier this week. The new deal, as per the company’s news update via its official website, will see the chipmaker providing its Snapdragon chips to power Nothing’s “future tech products.”
While never officially mentioned, it has been hinted that Carl Pei’s startup company will eventually produce its first ever handset. As we’ve reported earlier this year, Nothing acquired the trademark and logos of the now-defunct Essential smartphone brand, which was originally established by former Android co-founder Andy Rubin. It is not clear whether the company will retain Essential’s unique design language for its first smartphone, or revive just the branding under its banner.
Seeing that Nothing is trying to introduce something fresh to the true wireless market with its earbuds, hopefully the company will also be trying out something new when it breaks into the smartphone scene. That being said, we’ll only find out if this would be the case whenever the company is ready to announce the alleged development of its first ever phone.
