Apple Announces New MacBook Pro; Starts From US$1999

Alongside the announcement of the M1 Pro and M1 Max, Apple also pulled the veil back from what many of us saw coming: the new MacBook Pro series. Unlike its predecessors, the new MacBook Pro lineup comes in two new sizes, 14-inches and 16-inches.

Specs-wise, the new MacBook Pro comes equipped with either the M1 Pro or M1 Max SoC. As for how much Unified memory you get, that is determined by your choice of processor; if you’re limiting yourself to the M1 Pro, you get 32GB of Unified Memory. For the M1 Max, the amount is doubled to 64GB.

For storage, the MacBook Pro is equipped with lightning-fast SSDs that are capable of achieving speeds of up to 7.4GB/s. As for capacities, it starts at 512GB and tops out at a whopping 8TB.

Moving on, the Magic Keyboard makes a comeback but unlike the previous iteration, the new keyboard brings back the physical toolbar at the top, indicating that Apple is officially ditching the touch bar that it initially introduced with the previous iteration of the MacBook Pro.

Ports-wise, both the 14-inch and 16-inch models of the MacBook Pro come with three USB-C ports with Thunderbolt 4 support, a full-sized HDMI port, and an SDXC card reader. And yes, the MagSafe port is also making a return.

Apple has also spared no expense with the displays on both MacBook Pro models. Both panels use a Liquid Retina XDR display with Mini LEDs, with a maximum brightness level of 1600 nits. Additionally, the new displays also support Apple’s ProMotion technology for adaptive refresh rates of up to 120Hz.

Size-wise, they start at 14.2-inches for the 14-inch model, while the 16-inch model is rated at 16.2-inch. Additionally, not only do they have thinner bezels on all four, but Apple has seen fit to install a notch at its forehead that houses a 1080p webcam, but oddly enough, no FaceID.

Lastly, Apple has installed a new six-speaker sound system into the new MacBook Pro, which also supports its Spatial audio technology that Apple says changes the listening experience when playing music or video that supports Dolby Atmos.

In terms of pricing for the MacBook Pro, the 14-inch model starts from US$1999 (~RM8338), while the 16-inch model starts from US$2499 (~RM10424). Both models are already being listed on the Apple Malaysia website, but at the of writing, there is still local availability.
