Xiaomi Announces New Operating System Dubbed HyperOS

Xiaomi has announced a new operating system for its products called HyperOS. Similar to its existing OS, it will be based on Android and will take the place of MIUI, its custom skin that has been in every smartphone from the brand for 13 years.

The new system is apparently designed to tie in its range of smart products beyond smartphones. According to the company, HyperOS will integrate its ecosystem across 200 categories including smart home devices, cars, and more.

“In 2014, when the IoT business began to take shape, we began exploratory development and verification. In 2017, the research and development of a new system was officially launched to support all ecological devices and applications with an integrated system framework. This is our pursuit,” Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun stated. HyperOS is described as an integration between Android and Vela, its in-house IoT platform.

The operating system will make its debut when it comes pre-loaded on the upcoming Xiaomi 14 series, which is rumoured to launch later this month. While HyperOS will “gradually” replace MIUI, it is unclear if the OS will eventually also be available as an update for older models. As of now, the tech giant has not shown even a glimpse of what it will look like.
