Volkswagen ID. GTI Concept Is Basically An EV Golf

German car maker Volkswagen has previewed a new entry into its ID. line of electric vehicles at the iAA Mobility event at Munich, Germany. It is called the Volkswagen ID. GTI Concept, which the company says is “a concrete insight into how Volkswagen will transport the iconic GTI label into the electric future”. Which may explain why it looks so grounded for a concept car, so much so that you may even confuse it for a production model.

In fact, on the outside, the most outlandish-looking thing on the Volkswagen ID. GTI Concept are the 20-inch wheel rims. Naturally there are some aggressive elements to be found, like the front spoiler and the two red towing points, but these are not exactly rare for performance-oriented cars.

On the inside is where things get a bit more concept-like. Rather than the conventional dashboard, you get the GTI Digital Cockpit, or a 10.9-inch screen, with a head-up display being projected on top. Above the centre console is the 12.9-inch infotainment display, and in the opposite direction is the GTI Experience Control, with the familiar golf ball design. The steering wheel looks as aggressive as you would expect from a car sporting the GTI branding, complete with an illuminated 12 o’clock marker. Though the best bit here is probably the playful stylised Stop and Fast Forward icons on the brake and accelerator paddles.

On the flip side, the company has not shared any performance figures for the Volkswagen ID. GTI Concept. The only bit of detail that was revealed was the fact that it will have an electric motor driving the front axle. This is paired with a differential lock that is electronically controlled by a Vehicle Dynamics Manager, making it similar to the current petrol version of the Golf GTI.

For now, there’s no world on when a production model of the Volkswagen ID. GTI Concept will be made. Ditto its potential price, but on that front, the company referenced its earlier concept EV, the ID.2all, which it claims is priced around EUR25,000 (~RM125,642). Considering the GTI tag, it’s likely that this more recent one will likely be priced higher once it goes into production.
