Toy maker Mattel has officially unveiled production samples of its 1:64 scale 1985 Proton Saga replica during the Art of Speed Malaysia expo that was held over the weekend. For those who missed it, the company initially announced the inclusion of the car to its popular Hot Wheels toy line during the 40th anniversary celebration for its Malaysian presence last year, which also showcased several 3D printed prototype models of the model.
From the photos provided, it is without a doubt that the production version looks more detailed than the initial prototypes. The Hot Wheels replica now features painted parts, translucent plastic for its windshield, windows and headlights, a vintage Proton crest up front, as well as Saga branding on either side of its rear doors. However, despite the bump in details, the rear part of the diecast sample still appears unpainted. It is unclear whether it would remain this way once it is shipped out.
It is also worth noting that this particular Proton Saga model will be the first vehicle from the national automaker and Malaysia to ever be released under Mattel’s popular toy line. And to commemorate this, the company will be shipping out a limited run of the replica featuring a blister card designed by 9-year-old Saw Jane Harn from Penang. Her design, which bears several national elements such as the Malaysian flag, the Petronas Twin Towers, hibiscus flower and more, was selected from more than 300 submissions across the country as part of a contest that was held prior to the official reveal.
The 1:64 scale Proton Saga replica is expected to be sold across the globe by the end of this year at a typical retail price for Hot Wheels models. Meanwhile, the limited edition which features Saw’s blister card design will only be released sometime in 2024.
