Samsung Delays Its Own Extended Reality Project

The Apple Vision Pro has a massive price tag waiting for when it officially hits shelves. Though while it has a sky high asking price, it’s not too difficult to argue that you’ll be getting what you pay for. This has apparently forced Samsung to delay an extended reality (XR) project that it was working on.

SBS Biz reports that Samsung had initially wanted to start mass production at the start of next year, but the company has decided to push these plans back by between one and two quarters. Citing a source familiar with the situation, the report notes that the decision came about after company officials had a look at what the Apple Vision Pro had to offer, from its specs and performance to its design.

Beyond its apparent delay, it’s unclear what else Samsung has planned for its upcoming extended reality product. And since the report only makes use of the broad term of XR, there’s no real indication as to if this will end up being a virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR) or mixed reality (MR) product. That being said, the report notes that it is expected to be running a Qualcomm chipset, as well as a Google operating system.

The last two lines up with what CNBC had reported back in March. Of course, at the time, the report quoted a Samsung senior vice president Patrick Chomet as stating that the company is working on “growing the mixed reality market” alongside partners Qualcomm and Google. Judging from this most recent report, those lofty claims may have since buckled under the reveal of the Apple Vision Pro.
