Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim is expected to meet with Tesla CEO Elon Musk next week to discuss further investments in Malaysia, The Star and Utusan Malaysia reports. The plan was revealed by the prime minister himself yesterday during a meeting session with state civil servants at MBS Hall that was held earlier.
“Elon Musk has asked to meet next week to discuss with me the possibility of him increasing his investments in Malaysia,” Anwar said. He added that the country needed more new domestic and foreign investments to increase its income and reduce its debts, with the latter of which now amounting to RM1.5 trillion.
The prime minister noted that he had previously met with investors from Japan, Saudi Arabia and China to discuss on increasing and expanding their stakes in the country. Of the three, Anwar revealed that China has made the highest contributions to Malaysia so far. “This is important, if there is no investment, unemployment will increase, the economy will not grow, restaurants, hotels and others will also be affected,” he said.
Further details regarding the meeting between Anwar and Elon have not been disclosed just yet, so it is unclear where or when it will actually take place. It is also worth noting that Tesla had recently announced that it will officially launch both its brand and EVs in Malaysia on 20 July 2023. This takes place a week after the proposed timeline for the meeting, so chances for the company’s CEO to stick around a while longer just to attend the event in person is slim.
