There have been plenty of iPhone 15 Pro leaks, some of them involving a multipurpose button that’s quite like the Action button on the Apple Watch Ultra. More recently, code in a recent beta of iOS 17 has at least some indication as to what people can do with it.
As MacRumors reports, this is specifically the fourth developer beta of iOS 17, but there are bits of code that hint at what the Action button equivalent of the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max can do. There are nine categories of shortcuts that can be assigned to the button. And being the thing that seemingly replaces the switch that toggles silent mode, that’s one of the shortcuts that can be assigned to it. Another option is simply assigning shortcuts like sending a message of playing a playlist to the button.
Other items in the list includes making the button serve as a shortcut for accessibility options like VoiceOver and Zoom. In the same vein, the button can also be used to quickly access the Translate app, or be the button to start or stop recording for the Voice Memos app. Another shortcut that the button can be used for is to quickly engage or turn off Focus mode.
The last few on the list have to do with making the Action button work with some camera functions. One is letting users quickly access the Magnifier app, the other is being a shortcut for the flashlight. And finally, and probably the best use for the button, is to use it as a shortcut to run the camera app and serve as the physical shutter button.
The iPhone 15 family, including the Pro and Pro Max that will actually have this Action button equivalent, are not out yet. But Apple is expected to unveil the family in September, as the company usually does. And if all the rumours about the button end up being accurate, it will likely be something that the fruit company highlights during the showcase.
