Transport Minister Anthony Loke has announced that the government is imposing a new key-performance-indicator (KPI) target of one million KM without disruptions for Rapid KL’s LRT and MRT services. Prasarana, the parent company of Rapid KL, has been told to achieve this target by the third quarter of 2026.
The minister said that the move is being made to assess the quality of public transport services. The KPI metric that will be used is called “Mean Kilometres Between Failures” (MKBF), which accesses the stability of trains by recording how far a train was operated without disruption.
Anthony said that Prasarana had previously disclosed the MKBF to his ministry, but the metric will be published on the company’s social media accounts starting next month on monthly basis. “Now the public will be aware if MRT and LRT had experienced any disruptions over a period of time,” he said.
The minister revealed that currently, the MKBF for the Kelana Jaya LRT line is 150,000 KM, which he labelled as unsatisfactory. He added that the target of one million KM without disruption for Rapid KL will be achieved in stages and he is confident that the services will improve as the line will be getting new trains in August.
As for what will be considered a disruption, Anthony stated that any technical disruption exceeding five minutes will be counted as a fault and will be evaluated through MKBF. Through the same platforms, there will also be weekly reports on the number of passengers, train and bus services, as well as elevators and escalators that have been refurbished or are under repair.
In January, the Ampang and Sri Petaling lines were majorly disrupted due to a damaged track at the Bandaraya station. A month later, Anthony revealed that commuters will have to endure the disrupted services for another eight months while the repair work takes place. To make matters worse, six stations on the two lines were suspended until further notice due to the trains not receiving proper maintenance since the disruption began.
