GSC has officially opened a new IMAX hall that is part of its new branch at the East Wing of the IOI City Mall, Putrajaya. Unlike the other nine existing IMAX halls throughout the country, the newly opened hall is the first IMAX with Laser location in Malaysia according to the company.
First announced in 2015, IMAX’s website stated that the IMAX with Laser comes with a 4K laser projection system. With a promise of a higher brightness level than its Xenon-based counterparts as well as richer colour and sharper images, the system is also accompanied by a 12-channel sound system that is inclusive of newly added side and overhead channels.
Aside from being the first such installation in the country, other details regarding the hall are relatively scarce though. For example, neither IMAX nor GSC have publicly mentioned whether the IMAX with Laser hall at IOI City Mall East was equipped with a single or dual projectors setup.
Nevertheless, we did have a glimpse of the location through several images that were posted by Preetham Daniel, the IMAX’s Vice President of Theatre Development for India, South East Asia, Australia, and New Zealand, on Twitter earlier this month. In addition to that, GSC has also noted that the venue is capable of delivering IMAX 3D High Frame Rate (HFR) experience.
This means that the hall’s equipment is able to output movies at 48fps which is double the amount of standard framerate that is used for movies although HFR movies don’t come that often. Hence, it is apt enough that GSC has chosen to open its new IMAX with Laser hall by showing Avatar: The Way of Water which is the latest HFR movie to date.As for the ticket price, the cost to catch a screening at IMAX with Laser in GSC IOI City Mall East is RM42 per person for adults based on our quick check at GSC’s website earlier today. As for children, OKUs, and senior citizens, the price is slightly lower at RM27 per person.
