DualSense Edge Teardown Reveals Much Smaller Battery

DualSense Edge battery

The DualSense Edge controller is out this week, so it makes sense that people are starting to get their hands on it. Among them include Australian controller modding company Budd’s Controllers which did a teardown on said controller. And through that process, we see that the PS5 equivalent of a Pro controller has a much smaller battery compared to the base model.

As shared on the company’s official Twitter account, Budd’s Controllers shared an image showing the torn down DualSense Edge with the battery pack exposed, with the battery of the base model right in front of it. So in size we’re already seeing a much smaller battery.

And it’s not just a shrinking in physical size either. The battery is rated at 1050mAh, or 3.9Wh at 4.2V, according to the actual teardown video which was streamed on Twitch. The video also mentions the capacity of the battery in the base model DualSense, which had a 1560mAh rating.

The roughly 33% reduction in capacity means that, on the surface, we’re looking at just about the same reduction in use time on the DualSense Edge. For what it’s worth, the new features of the pricier controller come in the form of interchangeable parts and the back pedals, the latter of which are the only ones that actually use power, and likely in negligible amounts at that.

For what it’s worth, Sony Interactive Entertainment has warned potential customers ahead of time that battery life won’t be one of the improvements that the DualSense Edge will be bringing to the table. In a statement to The Verge, the company says instead to use the USB cable provided in the box to preserve battery life. So that’s something to keep in mind if you’re looking forward to using this controller
