Discord, via a tweet by CEO Jason Citron, has clarified that it does not have any plans to add NFT integrations to its platform. This statement arrives just days after Citron shared a screenshot of an unreleased build of Discord on Twitter, which seemingly teased a potential implementation of two NFT-related cryptocurrency wallets, namely MetaMask and WalletConnect.
While the CEO said it’s “probably nothing” in the same tweet, that didn’t stop Discord users from expressing their disapproval. Some of which even threatened to cancel their Nitro subscriptions if the company added NFT or crypto-based integrations to its platform. Meanwhile, gaming news curator Ryan Brown claims that sources told him that Citron’s tweet also resulted in a disparity among Discord’s staff, while “big game studio reps” threatened to migrate their communities to other platforms.

This huge backlash thus resulted in Discord’s recent clarification, where Citron also thanked everyone for sharing their perspectives on the matter. “We have no current plans to ship this internal concept,” he assured. The CEO also added that the company is currently focusing on improving the platform in the interest of protecting its users from spam, scams, and fraud.
It is actually unsurprising if Discord did actually consider implementing NFT or cryptocurrency features to its platform. Crypto-based trends (especially NFTs) have been on the rise as of late, with brands such as the NBA and comic book giant DC also hopping onto the bandwagon. Meanwhile, app reverse engineer Jane Manchun Wong discovered that Twitter is allegedly working on a new feature that would allow its users to showcase their NFT collection on the platform.
