US cinema operator AMC and Sony Pictures have announced they’ll be giving away 86,000 NFTs to those pre-ordering tickets for next year’s Spider-Man: No Way Home movie. Both companies stated that there will be 100 designs available, all of which will be handed out to ticket buyers at random, although none of them have been revealed at this time.
AMC says it will issue a code for the NFTs, which will be redeemable through a special website and distributed via Wax blockchain. The codes will be given out on 22 December, but advanced ticket buyers will have to wait until 1 March 2022 to claim the NFT. Another catch is that this giveaway is exclusive to AMC’s Stubs Premiere, A-List, and Investor Connect members – all of which are only available to US citizens.
This promotion is seemingly paying off for the cinema operator and its partner Sony Pictures. According to a recent report by CNet, eager moviegoers have stormed ticket sites across the US en masse to pre-order screenings for Spider-Man: No Way Home. This reportedly resulted in several ticket booking websites such as AMC’s own, ATOM, Fandango, CineMark and Harkins to experience connectivity issues or downtime. It is uncertain whether the sudden influx of bookings are related to the free NFT announcement, or is just purely coincidental.

While not officially released under the Marvel brand, the upcoming Spider-Man: No Way Home NFTs aren’t the first to officially feature iconic characters from the Disney-owned comic book giant. Back in August, Marvel had announced a collaboration with digital collectibles app VeVe to launch a variety of Captain America digital statues, as well as a digital version of the first issue of The Amazing Spider-Man comic book with different cover styles. Meanwhile, the brand’s closest rival DC also launched its own NFTs in October to celebrate the arrival of this year’s FanDome event.
Spider-Man: No Way Home will be premiering in the US on 17 December 2021. Meanwhile, the movie is slated to debut in Malaysian cinemas a day earlier on 16 December.
