Digi To Shut Down Its 3G Network In Phases Throughout This December

All telcos in Malaysia are currently busy going through the 3G network shutdown process following the directive that was announced by the government last year. The deactivation was done as part of the Jalinan Digital Negara (JENDELA) plan as the spectrum bands occupied by the 3G network will be repurposed to improve the coverage and performance of the 4G network.

For Digi, the full shutdown process will take place throughout December as revealed by this schedule that the telco has posted on its website:

Back in July, the telco has noted in its Q2 FY21 financial report [pdf] that it has successfully completed the 3G shutdown pilot which took place in Port Dickson. In the subsequent Q3 FY21 report [pdf], Digi said that less than 300,000 3G-only subscribers are still on its network.

In terms of coverage, 92% of the country’s population is covered by Digi’s LTE network according to both quarterly financial reports. In addition to that, 75% of the population is also within the reach of the telco’s LTE-A service.

According to JENDELA’s fourth quarterly report [pdf] which covers up until the end of September 2021, more than 1.2 million out of around 2.1 million 3G users in Malaysia have been migrated to 4G. The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission said that the migration will continue to take place well into 2022, even after the country’s 3G network goes offline at the end of this year.
