Last week, reports broke out about the performance woes of Microsoft’s Windows 11 OS on AMD Ryzen-based desktop systems. Then, as if to add insult to injury, a recent Windows Cumulative Update that was supposed to fix the issue only made it worse. The good news, however, is that there a true and proper fix is already on the way, at least on a beta level.
The announcement was made via Microsoft’s Insider Program Team’s official blog via an updated Windows 11 build, codenamed 22000.282. The build was released to its Insiders who have access to both Beta and Release Preview channels. As is the nature of all updates, the build is chock-full with updates, patches, and fixes, chief among them being a solution for the current L3 caching issue. That is currently plaguing AMD Ryzen-based systems.
To quickly recap, the current AMD Ryzen-based bug currently causes the L3 Cache latency on the CPUs to increase by nearly three times more. This decrease in performance was, as AMD puts, most noticeable in games most “commonly used for Esports”.
Again, the fix is still on a beta-level but if the solution does prove successful, the fix should effectively restore up to 15% of Ryzen CPU performance in some gaming tasks and Esports titles. On another note, while this fix does address the L3 cache problem, it still does not address the issues related to the single-threaded and multi-core workloads for AMD Ryzen CPUs.
