ASUS Confirms PCIe Gen5 Power Connector For ROG Thor PSUs During Z690 Presentation

ASUS recently confirmed that its next-generation of power supply units (PSUs) will be the first to offer a PCIe Gen5 power connector that comes in the form of a single, more compact 12-pin or 16-pin connector. On that note, the announcement also seems to indirectly confirm another rumour pertaining to NVIDIA’s upcoming GeForce RTX 3090 Ti.

Returning to the PSUs, the components were announced during a special event detailing ASUS’ Z690 motherboards, in conjunction with the recent announcement of Intel’s 12th generation Alder Lake desktop CPUs. The PSUs will be part of its ROG Thor lineup and will consist of three products: 1200W Platinum II, 1600W Titanium, and 1000W Platinum II.

As pointed out by Videocardz, these PSUs are designed to be paired with high-end CPUs and GPUs and, with the help of PCIe 5.0, channel the power through the components more efficiently, further reducing the possibility of power surges, especially among NVIDIA’s higher-end GeForce RTX 30 series cards.

As for availability, ASUS says that its new ROG Thor PSUs will be available from mid-November onwards with the 1000W model being the first to hit the market. At the time of writing, there is still no official pricing.
