Windows 11 Test Build Shows Notepad Getting AI Integration

Notepad Cowriter

Once upon a time, Notepad was the most basic of basic text processing software on a Windows PC. Then WordPad got phased out, with the former getting more and more features to fill in the void that the latter left behind. Soon, it may even get an AI-based feature, if the latest test build of Windows 11 is of any indication.

A user of X, previously Twitter, going by @PhantomOfEarth shared a screenshot of Notepad with a feature called “Cowriter”. Which sounds awfully similar to Cocreator for Paint that was seen late last year, down to the credits system.

In the same vein, @teroalhonen has found references to a waitlist for the feature, as well as an image that looks like it belongs in a blog post announcing the feature. This may be a sign that an official announcement is coming soon, though likely this will come to insiders testing the feature first before it gets to everyone else.

All that being said, it looks like Notepad has come a long way from its simple origins, for better or worse. Despite this though, there should be other features that the humble text software should get before generative AI, such as word count and and spell checks.
