Earlier this week, comms minister Fahmi Fadzil announced that service providers should no longer charge users for 5G access. In a recently issued statement, the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) says it fully supports the government’s recent decision, and will ensure that each mobile network operator comply with the commitments that have been stated.
Certain telcos such as U Mobile and Maxis have already made access to 5G available for free, while others continue to designate it as an additional paid feature. However, even after Fahmi’s announcement, it has been reported that some service providers are still offering the faster connection as a separate “booster” add-on which are priced separately from available plans.

MCMC is encouraging users to submit any complaints regarding 5G access charges to its portal via this link. Alternatively, they may contact the organisation directly through their hotline at 1-800-188-030.
The comms minister had also recently revealed that 5G network services have successfully reached 80.2% coverage in populated areas in Malaysia as of 31 December 2023. The government is expected to announce the transition of one wholesale network to a dual network within this month, Fahmi added.
