Sony Reportedly Developing Own Upscaling Technology For PlayStation

It’s rumoured that Sony is currently developing its own version of an upscaling technology, to be featured with the launch of its upcoming and rumoured PlayStation 5 (PS5) Pro console. According to Jeff Grubb of Giant Bomb, the technology would the Japanese Corporation’s own alternative to NVIDIA’s own DLSS upscaling technology.

The alleged news of Sony’s decision to move at its own pace to develop its own upscaling technology, and not take advantage of the currently existing technology, is honestly a bit of a surprise. Given that both the current PS5 and upcoming PS5 Pro are based on a chipset made in collaboration with AMD, you would not be wrong in thinking that Sony would at least consider utilising AMD’s own FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR) technology to some applicable extent.

That being said, Sony’s upscaling endeavour clearly won’t be making waves in the PC space and is virtually isolated within the space of console gaming. Specifically, and stating the bleeding obvious here, it’ll be exclusive to the PS5 Pro. For that matter, having a “DLSS-like” upscaling technology would certainly help make the framerates jump, as it has been proven by NVIDIA since 2018, when it first introduced the technology to the world, along with the launch of the Turing-based GeForce RTX 20 Series GPUs in 2018.

In any case, this news still stands as hearsay and unconfirmed news at this moment, so as always, and until Sony makes an official announcement, take this bit of news with the surgeon general’s warning for salt consumption.
