Nintendo Switch OLED Gets A Mario Red Edition

Nintendo Switch OLED Mario Red

Were it not for the announcement of the upcoming Super Mario Bros. Wonder, we’d have thought that The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom would have been the final game for the handheld console hybrid. And by extension, we’d pegged the game’s special edition version of the Nintendo Switch OLED to be the last one. But with a new first party game on the way, this almost naturally meant a new special edition device. And as expected, that’s exactly what the company announced.

Posted on X, previously Twitter, are a set of images for the Nintendo Switch OLED Mario Red Edition. As the name suggests, nearly the entirety of the set comes in red, with only hints of black highlights on things like the buttons of the Joy-Cons. Even the dock is entirely in red, with a Mario silhouette stamped in another shade of the colour at the back.

At this point, we’d usually go into describing any additional detailing on either the Joy-Con controllers or the dock itself. After all, that’s usually where most of the magic on a special edition Nintendo Switch is. But for this Mario Red Edition, the only bit of detailing is the aforementioned silhouette stamp. The rest of the set is actually pretty bland. But maybe it’s the unexpected simplicity of this edition that makes it so alluring. Or maybe it’s just the colour red.

The Nintendo Switch OLED Mario Red Edition is priced at US$349.99 (~RM1,622) and will only be officially released on 6 October 2023. That’s quite a bit earlier than the Super Mario Bros. Wonder, which has a release date of 20 October. For now, no word on pre-orders by local retailers just yet. Ditto additional accessories that the Tears of the Kingdom got as well.
