Canon Japan yesterday released a promotional image on its official website and social media channels, teasing a new camera that’s designed for vloggers and content creators. Based on the brief information displayed, the device is set to be fully unveiled next week on 11 May 2023.
As expected, the company did not reveal much about the upcoming product, apart from claiming that it will provide “new possibilities for vlogs.” Usage of Canon cameras for this purpose isn’t entirely new, with numerous vloggers using the likes of the EOS R10, EOS R7, EOS RP and many others for their videos. However, this new shooter is perhaps the first ever to be designed specially with content creators in mind, as seen by its compact size and seemingly new form factor.
Speaking of which, the teaser image suggests that it may sport a vertical design – a completely new form factor and a first from the Japanese camera manufacturer. Also visible is what appears to be a fixed lens that’s situated on the upper half of the device, which may or may not provide ultra-wide or zoomable viewing angles. One thing’s for certain, it is shown to be compact, though more akin to point-and-shoot cameras rather than pocket-sized devices such as the DJI Pocket series or GoPros.

One particular part of the device that’s revealed in the image is what appears to be a rotating stand, which enables it to stand vertically on its own without the assistance of external accessories. That being said, it isn’t entirely clear whether the upcoming camera would exclusively shoot in portrait mode or otherwise. Besides that, we know for certain that it will be offered in the classic black colour, though it is possible that other options may also be made available upon launch.
Of course, this isn’t the first time that Canon has introduced a product that’s unlike its usual camera offerings. Examples that come to mind include other one-off releases such as the ultra compact point-and-shoot Canon IVY REC and the monocular-styled PowerShot Zoom. But unlike the aforementioned, this upcoming camera wasn’t produced through crowdfunding campaigns.
Nevertheless, we’ll only find out regarding its features and other details next week once it is officially unveiled. Whether or not the product will be released to other regions outside of Japan remains to be seen.
