Uncharted 4 was to be Nathan Drake’s last outing as series protagonist. Canonically, this remains true, with The Lost Legacy spin-off not featuring the treasure hunter in any significant way. All that being said, it looks like there is another Uncharted game in the works. But rather than being a continuation of the story, this next game will reportedly be a reboot of sorts.
The Leak cites two sources who claim that Sony Interactive Entertainment has decided to reboot the Uncharted series earlier this year. Series developer Naughty Dog will not be the primary team behind its development though. While the storied studio is expected to assist with the project initially, the bulk of the process will be handed over to an as of yet unknown developer.
Beyond its nature of being a reboot and that the project is not helmed by Naughty Dog, nothing much is known about this next Uncharted title. Though as with most reboots, this could go back to the starting point of the story while mixing up the formula to provide a fresh but still familiar experience. That, or completely throw the old mix out and introduce a new cast and plot altogether. The latter being the inherently riskier approach, obviously, especially in light of the Saints Row reboot and the way that turned out, technical issues aside.
While the report notes that the decision to reboot Uncharted was made earlier this year, it also states that development will likely only be in its infancy stages, if that. With that in mind, it will be a very long time before we hear SIE make an announcement on this. That being said, there’s a very low, but non-zero possibility of the game getting teased at The Game Awards that’s happening tomorrow. After all, Bethesda’s The Elder Scrolls VI was first revealed all the way back in 2018, but its launch date is still nowhere in sight.
