Hyundai Premieres Its New Ioniq 6 EV

South Korean car company Hyundai yesterday unveiled its latest electric sedan, the Ioniq 6. Like its predecessor that was launched locally earlier this year, the newer vehicle is built atop of its e-GMP platform and is revealed to sport a curvy aerodynamic exterior. As previewed by its promo video, the Ioniq 6 is also showcased to feature a versatile interior that is designed to allow owners to comfortably work or rest in – when they’re not driving on the road, of course.

While its predecessor is offered as a crossover, the new Ioniq 6 arrives as a four-door sedan. This time around, Hyundai has gone with a more curvier look – almost reminiscent of Porsche’s design language. Also gone are the cool square LED headlights and taillights that are featured on the Ioniq 5, which are instead replaced with more traditional-looking ones in front as well as a wide LED light bar on the newer model’s back. Additionally, it is equipped with side view cameras and the option to feature 20-inch rims.

Dubbed as a “cocoon-like personal space,” the Ioniq 6’s interior can also act as a “comfy and personalised hideaway” for its owner – providing enough room for them to relax, and plenty of USB ports (four USB-C and a single USB-A) that will allow the car to also function as a mobile office. Featured onboard is a centre console equipped with a 12-inch full-touch infotainment display and a 12-inch digital cluster with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto support, as well as multi-connection Bluetooth support and customisable ambient lighting. It is also the first Hyundai EV to feature its over-the-air (OTA) software update capability. In terms of audio, onboard is an eight-speaker setup by Bose.

As for the nitty gritty, the Hyundai Ioniq 6 is offered with either rear-wheel or all-wheel drive electric motors. According to the company, the latter is capable of producing a combined power output of 239 kW (320 hp) and 605 Nm of torque. This particular variant is also said to have a maximum top speed of 185 km/h and could complete the century sprint in 5.1 seconds. Meanwhile, it is expected to cover a considerably impressive range of 610km on a single charge.

Speaking of which, the Ioniq 6 will be available with either a standard 55 kWh battery pack or an optional larger 77.4 kWh pack. Based on the Hyundai E-GMP pure electric architecture, the EV also offers fast 400V / 800V multi-charging capability, with an estimated charging time of just 18 minutes from 10 to 80% via a 350-kW charger.

According to Hyundai, the new Ioniq 6 EV is slated to enter production in Q3 for the South Korean market, which is then followed by Europe later in the year and also the US in January 2023. The company has yet to confirm the vehicle’s pricing or its expected availability in other regions outside of those that were mentioned.
