Huawei officially launched its latest earbuds in Asia, the next-generation FreeBuds Pro 2. The device builds on the original FreeBuds Pro released back in 2020, improving certain features and boasting better sound quality under its collaboration with French audio technology firm Devialet.
Visually, the FreeBuds Pro 2 looks almost indistinguishable from its predecessor, save for the rectangular stem merging with a curvature on the side of the earbud. The stems are used for controlling the device, with pinching used to control basic functions as well as swiping up and down for volume control.
The new earbuds are equipped with active noise cancellation (ANC) that has been slightly upgraded from 40db noise suppression on the previous model to 47db. With a total of four microphones including a bone conduction microphone, Huawei also implements noise cancellation during calls using a “deep neural network algorithm”.
Fitted with 11mm dynamic drivers and a planar driver, the Huawei FreeBuds Pro 2 feature what it call “Triple Adaptive EQ”, which tunes the audio in real-time depending on the volume level, your ear canal structure, and how you’re wearing them. They also support the high-resolution LDAC codec.
The FreeBuds Pro 2 are capable of dual connection which allows them to connect to two Bluetooth devices at the same time, but this is not supported on MacBooks. Additionally, the earbuds themselves are rated at IP54 for water and dust resistance but this does not cover the charging case.
The new earbuds are powered by the same 580mAh battery as its predecessor so the battery life remains roughly the same. On a single charge, they can last 6.5 hours without ANC and four hours with ANC enabled, with a total playback time of 30 hours using the charging case. And speaking of the case, it also supports wireless charging, albeit at a slow 2W pace.
The Huawei FreeBuds Pro 2 come in Ceramic White, Silver Frost, and the new Silver Blue colour. While they were just announced by the tech giant at its APAC event for the region, they were actually launched by the company for the European market last month, priced at about EUR200 (~RM910). Local pricing has not been revealed just yet but Huawei has announced that the new earbuds will be coming to Malaysia in August, so look forward to that.
