DNB has been on a roll these past few months as it quietly expands its list of supported devices for its 5G network. The latest addition to the list is a couple of new devices from OnePlus, bringing the brand’s total number of 5G-ready smartphones in Malaysia to eight.
The list now adds the latest midranger offerings from OnePlus, the Nord CE 2 and Nord 2T. This is in addition to older midrange phones such as the Nord CE and Nord CE 2. Of course, the list includes the brand’s latest flagship, the OnePlus 10 Pro. It also includes two of its previous flagships, the 9 Pro and the 8T, with the latter being the oldest OnePlus device on the list.
One interesting thing here is that the last OnePlus device on DNB’s list is the Nord 10T, a phone which does not exist yet seeing as how the Nord 2T just came out. We think this could possibly be a typo for the Nord N10 or it could be an outright error.
While it’s good that DNB is expanding its list with popular smartphone brands such as OnePlus to be compatible with Malaysia’s 5G infrastructure, there is one particular “fruit” brand that is notably missing. Despite the local next-generation network being closer than ever to a nationwide rollout, support for iPhones are still lacking.
To catch you up on Malaysia’s 5G saga, the big four telcos in the country — Celcom, Digi, Maxis, and U Mobile (CDMU) — demanded to own a majority stake in the state-owned vehicle instead of the minority equity offered. The government then swiftly rejected the proposal and warned that CDMU might lose out on 5G if it does not reach a deal with DNB before the deadline.
On 30 June, Communications and Multimedia Minister Annuar Musa revealed that six telcos have agreed to equally share a 70% stake in DNB but did not disclose which ones specifically. He said that more details would be revealed on 8 July but until now, there has been no news of it.
