The Original Doom Gets A Ray Tracing Mod

Doom Ray Traced

The original Doom from 1993 has been the subject of many technical “challenges”, as many try to squeeze the game into unexpected hardware. There’s a new one that sees ray tracing getting squeezed into the game that’s nearly three decades old.

This project, officially known as Doom Ray Traced, is one that’s being done by a modder who goes by sultim-t. As the name suggests, the goal here is to add real-time ray tracing to the original Doom. The result is a really old game looking a lot better than it needs to be.

While it’s making a really old game look great, there are some surprising restricitions to Doom Ray Traced. For one, you’ll need a PC running an Nvidia GPU to run the mod. And it doesn’t look like sultim-t intends to add support for AMD cards themselves, noting in the GitHub entry that “it would be nice if someone will decide to add the AMD GPUs support”.

If this sounds like something you’d like to try, then you can head to the GitHub page linked below for the source code and playable build of Doom Ray Traced. You’ll also need an original Doom.wad file and the PrBoom source port.
