Sony To Add Voice Commands To PS5 Beta

PS5 voice command beta

It looks like Sony Interactive Entertainment will be adding voice commands to the PS5 some time in the future. In a recent PlayStation Blog post, the company says that it will be adding the feature to the console’s beta software.

This will work the way voice commands work on most of your smart devices today. You activate it by saying “Hey, PlayStation”, and from there you can tell the PS5 to run specific games or settings, and even control playback while playing media. You can turn the feature off entirely if you don’t like it.

Other things to come in the latest beta include the addition of Open and Closed Parties. The former is as the name suggests, letting your friends see what’s going on and join freely. For the latter, only those you invite will be able to join. Then there are other changes like UI tweaks such as allowing you to pin up to five games to your PS5 home screen.

At this point, it’s worth pointing out that access to the beta is only open for PlayStation gamers in the US and UK. But since it’s in the beta, if all goes well then it’s pretty likely that these additions will be rolled out to everyone. That being said, there’s no mention of when that will be.

Back in September 2019, SIE filed a patent for an AI-powered digital assistant. It looks like this is one of the instances where we get to see a patent actually entering the real world.
