Ahead of its Galaxy Unpacked event, there have been extensive leaks on the Samsung Galaxy S22 and the Galaxy Tab S8. Now, prominent leaker Evan Blass has released the company’s entire press release regarding the upcoming tablet ahead of schedule which has also revealed Samsung’s plan to further increase the coverage of operating system and security upgrades for its devices.
If the leak is to be believed, Samsung will roll out four years of OS upgrades and five years of security updates for certain flagship Galaxy devices. Currently, Samsung promises three major Android upgrades and four years of security updates for most of its high-end and mid-range devices.
According to the leaked press release, devices that will be eligible for the longer upgrade cycle include the upcoming S22 and Tab S8 series, the Z Fold3, the Z Flip3, and the S21 series. This means phones that are being launched this year, including last month’s S21 FE, will eventually receive Android 16.
If Samsung follows through on this, it will set a high standard for other phone makers to pursue, though it still can’t beat the Fairphone 2, which has had OS upgrades for six years since its release in 2015. Meanwhile, the new Galaxy devices are set to be unveiled on 9 February at 11PM Malaysian time, which you can watch on Samsung Malaysia’s website.
