Sony Interactive Entertainment Granted PS5 Faceplate Patent

Sony PlayStation 5

The PS5 faceplates have been something of a market for accessory makers, but one that a few have gotten in trouble for. You’d think that it’s something that Sony Interactive Entertainment already has a patent for, but surprisingly, it was only granted as recently as last week.

OPAttack was the first to spot the PS5 faceplate patent, which was titled simply “Cover for Electronic Device”. In it are the various diagrams of the faceplates in different angles, but nothing that we haven’t already seen before.

Perhaps an important element here is the description of “The ornamental design for a cover for electronic device”. Some parts of the faceplates in the diagrams are also depicted with broken lines which “depict portions that form no part of the claimed design”, despite them being pretty important parts of the faceplates, like the hooks that attach them to the console body. This would suggest a skin that you stick onto the plates, rather than the whole faceplates themselves.

Considering the whole Dbrand drama last month, one would have thought that the patent was granted a month before. The accessory maker also speculated at the time that this was a sign that Sony Interactive Entertainment would be making its own official PS5 facepates. This may very well be the case. But you’d think that the indicator would be the differently coloured DualSense controllers and Pulse 3D headsets, rather than a patent.
