Samsung officially announced that it has developed its first LPDDR5X DRAM modules. The new memory module is a successor to last year’s LPDDR5 DRAM for mobile devices and is based on something of a new process node.
Whereas the brand’s LPDDR5 was based on a 10nm process node, Samsung’s LPDDR5X is based on a 14nm based, 16-gigabit (Gb) process, and is designed for use with many of today’s high-speed data services, including 5G, AI, and more recently, the “metaverse”.
Specs-wise, Samsung is expected to ship out its 16Gb LPDDR5X in capacities of 64GB per memory package, as a start. In terms of performance, the new memory will be capable of achieving speeds of 6.4Gbps, making it approximately 1.3 times faster than the current LPDDR5 DRAM. Further, it should also consume 20% less power than its predecessor.
As for availability, Samsung says that it plans on collaborating with global chipset manufacturers later this year, in order to establish what it says would be a more “viable framework” for digital reality, with LPDDR5X leading the way.
