Hacker Group Uncovers PS5 Root Keys; First Step In Modding The Console

Sony PlayStation 5

The PS5 is still, after over a whole year since launch, still is not exactly easy to get ahold of. But it looks like hackers have managed to get to something that should be the more difficult thing to find – the console’s symmetric rook keys. This is one of the first steps in being able to mod the console.

Hacker group fail0verflow posted its achievement on Twitter. It also claims that the PS5 root keys “can all be obtained from software – including per-console root key, if you look hard enough”. Not exactly to anyone’s surprise, the group did not share information of the method used to achieve this.

The name fail0verflow may not ring a bell, but it’s a notorious enough hacker group that has been around at least since 2011. That was when the group basically laid the PS3 bare. The group also did the same for the PS4, as well as the Nintendo Switch, according to Eurogamer.

As mentioned, the uncovering of the PS5 symmetric root keys means the world is one step closer to being able to mod the console. And piracy would surely follow as another consequence, intended or not. There’s also another joke to be made about these root keys being easier to find than the console itself in the market, excluding scalper markups.
