Back in September, South Korea passed a law that made it illegal for Google to limit in-app payment methods. The internet search giant was also fined for it too. Now, two months later, the company has outlined its implementation of alternative in-app payment methods beyond its Play Store.
The announcement came via the company’s own blog post, in which it describes what the process will look like. At checkout, users in South Korea will be given a choice of which payment method to use, with the existing Google Play option remaining.
If one does choose an alternative payment method, the internet search giant says its cut from the transaction will also be lower. The company says its cut will be reduced by four percent, but that’s just because that amount will instead go to the alternative payment service provider. So if the company is supposed to take 15% from each transaction, it will only take 11%. But this doesn’t change the amount a consumer in South Korea will have to pay.
All that said, Google has not mentioned when the changes will go into effect. All the company says is that it will be “providing more details in the weeks and months ahead”.
