Maxis recently revealed that its customers can now access 5G network in Singapore, Thailand, and Indonesia when they are roaming in those countries. This is even though they are not yet able to access 5G in Malaysia itself given that the service is not yet available to the public over here.
Interesting enough, the 5G roaming access is also available for Hotlink customers. Maxis noted that there is no setup required as long as customers are using supported 5G devices.
That being said, you still need to be connected to the correct roaming partners though. For example, the 5G connection for Maxis customers when they are roaming in Singapore is only available through Singtel while in Thailand and Indonesia, Maxis 5G roaming partners are AIS and Telkomsel, respectively.
In terms of pricing, there is no difference from the usual 4G-based roaming pass. For Maxis Postpaid as well as Maxis Unlimited Postpaid & Fibre customers, it costs RM 29 per day via the Unlimited Data pass at any of these three countries.
They can also choose the 7-day ASEAN Plus Unlimited Data pass which costs RM 49 or the 30-day World Unlimited Data pass that can be obtained for RM 99. Alternatively, there is also the generic DataRoam Pass which costs RM 38 per day and has a 500MB quota.
Hotlink Prepaid and Postpaid customers can connect to 5G via the existing DataRoam Pass that has a 1GB quota and is priced at RM 10 per day. Available starting from today onwards, Maxis noted that more countries will be added to its 5G roaming list very soon.
As for the 5G general availability in Malaysia itself, it will only take place in December 2021 covering Putrajaya, Cyberjaya, and parts of Kuala Lumpur. From there, the Ministry of Finance-owned entity that is responsible for the country’s 5G rollout, Digital Nasional Berhad aims to make it available within 40% of the country’s populated areas by the end of next year and 80% by 2024.
