OnePlus CEO Confirms Cancellation Of OnePlus 9T; Announces New “Unified OS”

OnePlus 9 Pro Prototype Hasselblad Leak

Pete Lau, CEO of OnePlus, confirmed that it has cancelled the development and production of a OnePlus 9T. The CEO to Oppo’s sister brand broke the news in an announcement, posted on OnePlus’ official site.

The decision to cancel the production of a OnePlus 9T is a first for the brand, breaking away from its tradition of producing a “T” variant of an existing model, usually half a year after the launch of the non-T models. For the uninitiated, the tradition of making a “T” version of a OnePlus goes all the way back to OnePlus 3T, which launched in 2016.

One reason behind the decision is said to have stemmed from another announcement that, surprisingly, revolves around what Lau is calling OnePlus 2.0. Starting next year, both OnePlus and Oppo – of which Lau is also its Chief Product Officer – devices will transition into using what Lau has described as a “unified and upgrade global operating system” that will be on the devices of both brands.

Lau goes on to say that the new global OS will combine OxygenOS’ fast, smooth, clean, and lightweight experience with the reliable, smart, and feature-rich software design of ColorOS. As for when the new OS will make its debut, OnePlus says that its next flagship device, due in 2022, will be the first phone to launch wit the newly integrated OS. In that same year, the brand will also release a major Android update for all currently existing OnePlus devices that will update them to the new OS.
