Media Prima this week has officially rolled out a new pay-per-view streaming service called tonton Cinema. It generally marked the streaming platform’s return to the paid business model which the company has left back in 2018 although this does not mean the whole Tonton is now under paywall though.
This is because tonton Cinema catalogue currently focuses on movies that are made for cinemas and television. The rest of tonton’s on-demand contents are still being made available for free on its website which not exactly surprising since Media Prima has uploaded plenty of dramas and TV shows to YouTube for quite some time although live TV feeds are still being self-hosted by tonton.
In terms of pricing, the movies within tonton Cinema can be obtained from RM 11.95 onwards although it is currently charging customers between RM 1 to RM 3.90 (depending on the platform of their device) as part of its launch promo. Once the payment has been made, you then have 48 hours to watch the content that you rented.
There are no free trials being offered on tonton Cinema at the moment although the first three minutes of each content are being shown for free as teasers. As for its availability, tonton Cinema can be accessed through its website and mobile app while the smart TV app is apparently in the works as well.
Meanwhile, it appears that Media Prima has since converted the existing tonton app into the new tonton Cinema app through an update dated 13 March 2021. So, those that have been relying on the app to binge-watch dramas and TV shows from Media Prima may have to say farewell to the old app.
